Abstracts and subsequent essays should be philosophically substantial but accessible and fun, written to engage the intelligent lay reader. Contributors of accepted essays will receive an honorarium.
Possible themes and topics might include, but are not limited to, the following:
Search for identity; pedagogy at Hogwarts; attitude toward authority; flawed heroes; Rowling on the media and issues of media ethics; metaphysical status of the undead; racism/classism; Quidditch ethics; Christian elements in the Potter books; ethics of love potions; Dumbledore and the Stoics; Dumbledore and Machiavelli; wizarding politics and/or economics; death/afterlife/quest for immortality; ethics of memory modification; Rowling’s metaphysics of the soul/metaphysics of horcruxes/fragmentation of psyche that happens as a result of bad choices; Rowling and postmodern themes; Rowling and gender bias; Dumbledore’s outing and authorial prerogative/intention. Aim either for a particular focus on the last three books of Rowling’s series or themes running through the entire series.

- Submission deadline for first drafts of accepted papers: August 15, 2008
- Submission deadline for final papers October 15, 2008
